A Family Affair
Founded by Sam and Aaron Livingston, the McLean County Dry Goods Store occupied the 100 block of Washington Street when it opened in 1866. For the next century the Livingston retail enterprise would shape Downtown Bloomington.
In 1873, Aaron Livingston, a cousin to the founders Sam and Aaron, bought the business and renamed it A. Livingston & Co. During the 1890’s Livingston named is his sons, Milton and Sam, partners at the store. From that point on the store was known as A. Livingston & Sons.
In 1917, the Livingston’s razed five of the seven original Greek Revival-style buildings on Washington Street to make way for the current building that Michael’s Restaurant is located in today.
The Livingston Department store was open until 1979 when the downtown retail scene was replace by Eastland Mall and a bustling Veterans Parkway.
Michael’s opened its doors in 2000 and has been serving downtown Bloomington ever since. Owned and operated by the Nurceski family, Michael’s continues the longstanding tradition of family owned businesses in Downtown Bloomington.
